Student Forum

All students and teachers of the Middle School are members of the Forum, the Middle School student government. Forum gives students the opportunity to develop leadership abilities and encourages active participation in and responsibility for school life. Forum meets regularly throughout the year with the Dean of Students and Head of Middle School. Forum members introduce the suggestions of their classmates to the Forum for discussion.

 

Student Leaders Job Descriptions

President of the Middle School

  • Presides over Morning Meetings
  • Presides over Forum meetings
  • Develops agenda for weekly Forum meetings
  • Coordinates plans and committees for special events
  • Serves as a representative to the faculty from student body
  • Leads by example in support of school rules and philosophy
  • Serves on “steering committee” to plan weekly Forum agenda with Dean of Students
  • Must plan to attend GFS for Upper School
Vice President of the Middle School

  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Duties as above when President in not available
  • Helps facilitate Forum meetings
  • Serves on “steering committee” to plan weekly Forum agenda with Dean of Students
Communications Director of the Middle School

  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Reads and records all minutes of Forum meetings
  • Communicates Forum activities with student body through bulletin board, email, and website
  • Handles all correspondence, record-keeping, financial accounts for Forum
  • Maintains and updates regularly Forum Moodle page or sends weekly email bulletins to Middle School News
  • Maintains, together with CDs of other grades, all flyers and posted communications about Middle School projects
  • Writes a blog for the GFS website
Honor Board Chair

  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Presides at Honor Board meetings
  • Acts as representative from the students to the faculty in matters concerning honor violations
  • Keeps track of demerits.
  • Alerts students who are in jeopardy of getting five demerits.
  • Coordinates with grade-level Honor Board Reps
  • Serves on “steering committee” to plan weekly Forum agenda with Dean of Students
Light Blue & Dark Blue Spirit Captains

  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Keeps records for all Merits earned for respective spirit team
  • Initiates and implement spirit activities (e.g. Play Days)
  • Encourages school spirit through enthusiastic and vocal support of school activities
  • Oversees Light/Dark cheerleaders and spirit heads
Donald Bentley Food Pantry Coordinators (2 7th Grade students)

  • Plans and organizes food drives for Donald Bentley (e.g. Stuff a Bus)
  • Attends all Forum Meetings during first half of the year.
  • Appointed by Middle School Head and Dean of Students after submitting a statement of intent
Sustainability Committee Coordinators (Two 7th Grade students)

  • Plans and organizes sustainability efforts for the Middle School (e.g. Earth Day)
  • Co-leads Green Club
  • Appointed by Middle School Head and Dean of Students after submitting a statement of intent
  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Meets periodically with school-wide sustainability representatives from other divisions
  • Keeps information on sustainability white board up to date
Big and Little Sister Coordinators (Two 8th Grade students)

  • Plans and leads organized activities for big and little sisters in the Middle School
  • Makes big and little sister pairings in August
  • Appointed by Middle School Head and Dean of Students after submitting a statement of intent
Diversity Committee Co-Heads (Two 8th Grade students)

  • Lead the Diversity Club along with Director of Multicultural Affiars and Diversity Leadership faculty Advisors
  • Organize projects, announcements, and assemblies around the themes of diversity, acceptance, differences, and multiculturalism.
  • Attends all Forum meetings (while co-head leads Diversity Club meeting)
Class President

  • Presides over class meetings
  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Coordinates plans for class special class events and service projects
  • Leads by example in support of school rules and philosophy
Class Vice President

  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Helps president with above duties and fills in for president when she is not there
Class Communications Director

  • Records all minutes from class meetings
  • Creates and maintains the “Class Notes” section on the commons room board
  • Helps monitor the appropriate use of the commons room printer
  • Maintains all flyers and posted communications in grade level commons rooms
  • Records suggestions from suggestion board
Honor Board Reps

  • Sitting member of the Honor Board
  • Acts as a representative from students to the faculty in matters concerning honor violations
  • Helps the Honor Board Chair maintain all demerit records
Forum Reps (Two per grade)

  • Attends all Forum meetings
  • Keeps accurate notes of Forum meetings
  • Represents views of class to Forum
  • Reports Forum news to class during Class Meetings

All Leaders should be in good academic standing. Any student who has appeared before the Honor Board twice in a school year will be ineligible to hold office the following year. Any current Middle School student leaders, or newly elected leader, who appears before the Honor Board may be asked to step down from her office.
