Arrive at Hopkins and hike to Dr. Grace Brush’s Geology lab to collect and analyze core sediments and observe Marshy Point’s different organisms which help unravel the history of the Chesapeake Bay. Make slides of crushed oyster shells and learn a bit from Justin, a post-doc working with Dr. Brush, about how to operate the electron scanning microscope that will be used next week to analyze the slides. Run over to the Milton S. Eisenhower Library, get some help from the Science reference librarian, and use Hopkins ID to check out some books on Bay life recommended by Priscilla, Dr. Brush's grad student.
In the Environmental Engineering Department, under the guidance of Dr. Brush, Hopkins Professor of Geography and Environmental Engineering and a pioneer in her field, Taylor, along with her WISE student partner Brita, are studying how terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems respond to disturbances caused by climate and humans. Across the JHU campus, WISE students Casey and Michelle are working in the Mechanical Engineering Department in the area of acoustics, the research specialty of Dr. Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Michelle is examining new materials for microphones and Casey is studying the influence of geometry of the head on how sound is heard, as well as working with Dr. Busch-Vishniac at Johns Hopkins Hospital on a study of how noises disturb sleep in the hospital.
