Logistics

Your academic schedule at Garrison Forest will permit travel to Johns Hopkins two-to-three afternoons a week. The JHU Homewood campus and JHU Medical Campus both are about a half hour's drive from GFS.

  • Typically, WISE students travel together to JHU on the same afternoons; exceptions are made on an as-needed basis
  • Garrison Forest School provides transportation, via one of the School's mini-buses with a School driver; in some instances, students may drive themselves based on special needs and with parental permission
  • WISE students eat lunch at Garrison Forest before traveling to Hopkins and return to Garrison Forest in time for dinner each day
  • Although Garrison Forest students wear a uniform during the academic day, WISE students wear their own clothes to Hopkins. In some cases, JHU faculty may require specific attire (waterproof boots if you'll be spending the afternoon on the Chesapeake Bay, for example)
  • WISE students are expected to conduct themselves with maturity and demonstrate good judgment at Hopkins; students are not chaperoned and are responsible for arriving at their particular lab on time after being dropped off and for returning on time to the meeting place for the mini-bus
  • An orientation program for WISE students provides a tour of the Homewood campus and information related to use of Hopkins resources such as the library
  • The GFS WISE academic coordinator typically drives WISE students to JHU and spends some time with each student in each lab on a rotating basis to provide support
  • The JHU WISE coordinator is available on the JHU campus to assist WISE students and works with the GFS Dean and Academic Coordinator to manage logistics, such as getting JHU ID cards for library and lab access; providing special activities, such as a panel of women graduate and undergraduate students who share their perspectives on women in science; sharing information about lectures and activities at JHU of interest to WISE students; and providing strong coordination with mentors
