About the James Center

Named for alumna Amabel Boyce James ’70, the James Center was established in 2008 through an inaugural E.E. Ford Foundation Leadership Challenge Grant. Garrison Forest was one of only five independent schools nationwide to receive the initial grant for the purpose of creating distinctive, nationally replicable, transformative programs. Founding Director Whitney “Whitty” Ransome, one of the co-founders of the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, and Director Andrea Perry created partnerships with organizations and non-profits around the region and country to give Garrison Forest students many opportunities to dive into learning and leadership.

Today, The James Center includes partnerships with Johns Hopkins University, dozens of non-profits and more. Two of The James Center’s hallmark programs—the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program and the Jenkins Fellows—are recognized nationally.
