On Friday, May 5, 4th Grade students recognized for winning the World Artists Experiences (WAE) writing contest traveled with their families and 4th Grade teacher Erin Viana to the Austrian Embassy in Washington DC to receive recognition. The event carried on the contest theme of "Building a More Peaceful World Through Kindness and Compassion" by showing a film created by Austrian students, playing music written by Austrian composers, and sharing a found poem, all of which centered around themes of compassion. The presenters encouraged the students and audience to continue to spread compassion and kindness by doing small things each day and by being ambassadors of kindness.
In addition to recognizing the winners, one of the goals of the reception was to help expose the audience to the culture of Austria. Each year the reception is held at a different embassy as one of WAE's missions is working to develop international understanding by working through cultural experiences and opportunities.
Among the contest judges was Michael S. Glaser, former Poet Laureate of Maryland. Brooke T., Gracie K. and Kennedy M. each had their work printed in an anthology. Abigail B. received honorable mention for her work. All of the students received copies of the anthology that included their published writing.
