Race for the Cure

Join the Team GFS for

The 2012 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Hunt Valley, Maryland

Sunday, October 21, 2012

Walk or run in the 5K or 1-mile Family Walk! Can’t be there in person? Be there in spirit by registering to "Sleep-in for the Cure!"

All walkers, runners, and "sleepers" must register online. All registrants receive a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure t-shirt and race bib.

Organized by the GFS Parent Association, this is the 15th year that Garrison Forest School has participated in the Race for the Cure. In honor of this milestone, our team goals are 400 members and $15,000. Race for the Cure is the only GFS school-wide community service program involving students, parents, teachers, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends. Join us as GFS comes together to find a cure for breast cancer!

IMPORTANT DATES:

October 8: Registration deadline to receive a special Team GFS baseball cap!

October 16: Pink and denim Day at GFS. Every GFS community member, regardless of whether he or she has registered, is encouraged to wear pink, denim and/or a Komen Race for the Cure t-shirt to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

October 16-23: Pink Ribbon Tree near the GFS Pond. The Race for the Cure Committee is collecting pink ribbons and notes (available in the Searle Athletic Center lobby) from the GFS community. Volunteers will place them on a tree near the pond as a symbol of hope and awareness for our shared efforts in finding a cure for breast cancer.

In 2009, 2010 and 2011, David Berdan, Lower School and Middle School science teacher, was the Overall Winner for the Maryland Race. Check out the training tips he shared in 2011 with Team GFS: click here

Why GFS Supports Komen

In early 2012, the Susan G. Komen Foundation made the controversial decision to cut funding for breast cancer screenings to Planned Parenthood. After a vigorous, national debate immediately following this decision, the Komen Foundation reinstated funding to Planned Parenthood and clarified its grant-making procedures.

Garrison Forest School Parent Association, which has sponsored the School’s participation in the Komen Race for the Cure for the past 15 years, respects the opinions, political and personal, of every member of the GFS community. GFS remains neutral in regard to Komen’s decisions regarding Planned Parenthood funding for breast cancer screening. Garrison Forest is supportive of breast cancer screening for all women. We will continue its organizational participation in Komen Race for the Cure as a school “team” in the Race.

As Garrison Forest’s only community-wide service project, the Komen Race for the Cure is an important opportunity for the School to teach girls and young women about breast cancer awareness. The event enables GFS to come together as a community to support a cure for a disease affecting women’s health worldwide and to provide a healthy, family activity as part of Garrison Forest’s mission to educate the whole child.
