First Grade Reader Theater: Cupcake

This year, the First Grade enjoyed reading books by author Charise Mericle Harper. The book Cupcake was particularly delicious. Cupcake, a plain vanilla cupcake, feels left out when all its fancy cupcake siblings are chosen over it. A plain green candle empathsizes and finally jumps on top of Cupcake’s head and solves the problem. The girls read the story and decided to turn it into a play. With teacher Gail Hutton’s script adapted from the book, the girls performed and taped a Reader’s Theater version of Cupcake. This fun activity has great pedagogical benefits. Notes Mrs. Hutton, "It enhances reading fluency, prosody, inflection, and expression. The girls learn very quickly by watching the video that expression and fluency make the story so much more interesting and meaningful."
