Boyce Center Advisory Board
Representing a wide range of industries and expertise in many different areas of academic achievement, wellness, girls' education and social-emotional wellbeing, the following group will serve as an advisory board for the Boyce Center for Learning and Thriving:
Lisa Fleck, Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Masters in Social Work from the University of Maryland. Lisa spent seven years treating families, adults and children at Kennedy Krieger Institute before spending 14 years as the Middle School Counselor and Director of Counseling at Garrison Forest School. Lisa moved to full time private practice in 2021 and has continued to work with independent day and boarding schools as a consultant developing social skills curriculum and providing professional development and support to school counselors and Residential Life faculty.
Susan Resnick, Internationally recognized math education consultant and author of Math in Focus K-8 (2020), Primary Math (2022) and Singapore Math Fact Fluency K-6. With over 30 years of education 30 years of education experience as a math teacher, special education teacher, gifted and talented coordinator, principal, district math coordinator, and national and international staff developer for mathematics instruction, Susan works to bring understanding about of differentiation and the principles of good instructional practices to the world of math teaching. She holds a master's degree in learning disabilities from Northwestern University, a degree in speech pathology and audiology and a post endorsement in curriculum, instruction and principal leadership, as well as being a certified Math Interventionist. Ben Shifrin, Head of School, Jemicy School, Owings Mills, MD. Prior to joining Jemicy School, the first school in the nation to be accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), Ben held various leadership positions, including serving on the U.S. State Department’s Office of Overseas School’s Advisory Committee on Exceptional Children and Stevenson University President’s Advisory Council, serving as an affiliate member of the Dyslexia Foundation, on the Board of Directors of the Dyslexia Tutoring Program, as a former VP, Board of Directors of the International Dyslexia Association, and as a member of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s Dyslexia Task Force. Rachel Simmons, Internationally known expert in raising and supporting girls and women in school and business. Author of Odd Girl Out, The Curse of the Good Girl, and Enough As She Is. A master facilitator and executive coach, she works for the world’s most innovative companies to design and deliver programs for women’s leadership development and allyship. She is renowned for translating social science research into accessible strategies with authenticity and humor, while creating a safe space to explore uncomfortable topics. Rachel serves on the faculty of the Google School for Leaders and is an associate with the firm Cultivating Leadership. After co-founding the national nonprofit Girls Leadership, she led the Phoebe Lewis Leadership Program at Smith College. Her writing has appeared in the The New York Times and Harvard Business Review, among many other publications. An ABC News Contributor for Good Morning America, Rachel is a recognized thought leader in the national media. Rev. Caroline "Stuart" Rinehart Stewart '66, Spiritual Director. Rev. Stewart previously served as Executive Director of the Center for Wellbeing at the Church of the Redeemer, faculty at the Center for Spiritual Support at GBMC and in a variety of priest and chaplain roles. She holds a MEd in Counseling from the University of Virginia, a master's degree in pastoral and spiritual care from Loyola University, and multiple certifications and post-graduate studies in theological topics.
Karen Swartz, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins University; Founder and Director of Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (ADAP). She received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Martha Sweeney, Former Head of School, The Odyssey School, Lutherville, MD. Marty's professional life has focused on the development of the language and literacy skills of preschool and school-aged children in public and independent school settings. Prior to taking on a leadership role at The Odyssey School, a school that provides specialized instruction to students who are kindergarten through 8th grade age with dyslexia, dysgraphia and other language-related learning differences, Marty owned a private practice in speech-language pathology. Marty’s vast experience is coupled with her appreciation of each child’s unique educational journey.
