Lindsay Kelland started coaching in 2009 at St. Mary's School in Raleigh, NC. She's always been pushing to have a volleyball team at GFS since she started here 10 years ago and was so excited when that happened in 2016. It was really exciting to have been a part of the inaugural season for the Varsity team! In Fall 2019 GFS began the Middle School program which was a great way to feed into our Upper School team. As head coach of the middle school volleyball team, she led the Grizzlies to multiple wins during their first season with a majority of players never having played before!
Coach Kelland started playing volleyball in 6th grade at her middle school and fell in love with the sport immediately. In 8th grade and throughout high school, she also started playing club/travel volleyball in central PA which still to this day holds some of her most valuable, fun memories traveling to tournaments and developing new friendships throughout the process. Some of her closest friends today, over 20 years later, are from playing volleyball! Coach Kelland continued to play in clubs and intramurals throughout college and as an adult, "My husband and I played in beach leagues in Baltimore for many years. It's a bit harder to play regularly with young kids at home, but anytime a tournament or opportunity to play comes around, I jump at the chance. My oldest daughter, Reese, who will be in Kindergarten at GFS, frequently asks me to toss her a volleyball and practices passing so that warms my heart!"
Coach Kelland's coaching philosophy is that we are a team and our goal is to work together, support and motivate each other. Winning is exciting and great, but having a team-focused mindset is most important for her. "As long as everyone is giving their best effort and having fun, our team will be successful! Especially in Middle School, mistakes will happen frequently and we want the players to learn from those mistakes in order to improve in the future!"
Lindsay Kelland grew up in Hanover, PA and frequently visit as most of her family is still there. Her husband, Eric and Lindsay live with their daughters Reese (5) and Brynn (2) in Westminster, MD after being in the Canton neighborhood in Baltimore for 8 years. "This is going to be my 11th year at GFS and I am so lucky to be able to have both of my daughters in Preschool and Lower School with me here. GFS really is our second home!"
Coach Kelland is the Director of Ed Tech and Libraries as well as a 7th grade advisor and yearbook advisor at GFS. Her family enjoys staying busy during the weekends and summer with beach trips, Orioles games and getting "out and about" as much as possible! Go Grizzlies!
