Communications, Director of Communications
Sarah Achenbach began her Garrison Forest career in 1992 as a member of the Development staff. Five years later, she took a development position at Hollins College, her alma mater, before embarking on a freelance writing career. Ms. Achenbach has written for numerous regional publications, including Style magazine (her personal essays in Style have won national magazine writing awards), the Johns Hopkins publications, BOSS, and others. In 2008, she co-authored Spirit of Place/Baltimore's Favorite Spaces (Charm City Publishing, 2008) with photographer Bill McAllen. A year later, City Paper named their efforts “Best Book About Baltimore.”
Throughout her career, Ms. Achenbach has maintained her deep GFS connection, writing viewbooks and several articles for the Garrison Forest Alumnae Magazine. In 2007, the School hired her to research and write the definitive Garrison Forest history, A Century of Spirit: Garrison Forest School, 1910-2010, which was published in early 2010 for the School's Centennial. In 2009, she was hired as the first GFS Director of Communications. In this capacity, she manages all marketing efforts, publications and web presence for the School.
As the mother two sons ten years apart, most of her free time is spent buying groceries and cleaning up LEGOs, but when she has a moment, she enjoys reading and thinking about gardening.
