Emily Appelbaum Brennan ’96, Assistant Vice President, HMS Insurance Associates, Inc.

Emily attended Garrison for 13 years and was President of the Middle School and President of the School her senior year.  After earning her law degree, Emily worked as in-house counsel for a surety company.  A surety bond is an insurance-related product that guarantees to a construction project owner that the project will be completed and all subcontractors and vendors will be paid.  As Vice President and Director of Claims for the sixth-largest surety company in the country, Emily handled a wide range of complex construction and surety matters in jurisdictions along the East Coast.   In 2016, Emily decided to change paths and joined HMS Insurance Associates as Assistant Vice President. Currently, Emily provides risk management consulting to the firm’s construction clients. She works with company owners and CFO’s to identify areas in their business that expose them to financial loss (contractual risk, occupational/safety risk, legal/HR/management risk, etc.), then creates and helps to implement an overall risk management program. Emily regularly writes and presents on topics related to construction risk management. Active with Garrison after her years at the School, Emily served on the Alumnae Board for 12 years including as President, Vice President and Secretary.  She is a Class News Agent and has been a participant in Alumnae Speed Interviewing since 2016. Emily sat on the Head Transition Committee (2013-14) and Strategic Planning Committee (2015). In addition, she was Reunion Program Chair in 2006 and will serve at the Reunion Chair this Spring when she celebrates her 25th Reunion.
