The best way to learn about marine science? Dive right in! 8th-12th Grade students recently returned from the Florida Keys, where they immersed themselves in hands-on marine science at MarineLab in Key Largo. Through snorkeling excursions, they explored the vibrant coral reef, mangrove and seagrass ecosystems, gaining firsthand experience with the diverse marine life that calls these habitats home.
Their journey also took them to the Everglades, where they witnessed the unique ecology of this vital wetland, and to a dolphin rescue organization, where they learned about marine mammal conservation and rehabilitation.
From snorkeling alongside vibrant marine life to labs and citizen science projects studying coral bleaching, microplastics and marine debris, this trip deepened our students’ understanding of marine ecosystems, conservation efforts and their role as environmental stewards while allowing them to engage with their learning material in a whole new way.
