GFS SCHOOL NEWS

For the first time ever, the Hour of Code saw 50:50 balanced participation between boys and girls in computer science, and GFS is proud to have played a part in shrinking the gender gap! The worldwide Hour of Code started in 2013 as a one-hour introduction to computer science designed to give students confidence in coding and to broaden participation in the field. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science. Students of all ages from around the world take part in coding activities during Computer Science Education Week to take part in Hour of Code. GFS has participated in Hour of Code since its beginnings.

GFS Upper School students took part in this year’s Hour of Code just before winter break with “Coding and Cookies,” organized by Digital Learning Specialist Neda Blackburn, during advisory. Students competed in advisory groups by facing 12 coding challenges and seeing who could complete the most challenges during the allotted time. In spite of some technical issues during the challenges, student-coders were enthusiastic throughout the competition. The Corbin/Morris Advisory won the competition by completing 91 percent of the challenges. The Upper School was rewarded with a dress down day for their participation.

Great job, coders!
