Upper School Chemists Study Food Dyes

Why is Red #40 so dominant in the food industry? Is the yellow coloring used in Gatorade safe to drink? AP Chemistry students in Ms. Oleisky’s class asked these questions and more in their spectrophotometric analysis of food dye project. For the project, the students researched different dyes commonly used in food.  They presented the results of their research during a poster session in the chemistry lab last Friday. Students and faculty members dropped in to hear the young chemists share their research and to enjoy some sweet treats that included the food colorings they examined.
